The shrine Shimogamo Jinja is one of the oldest shrines in Kyoto founded long before establishment of the capital in 794 on the triangle where the two rivers converge to become Kamo River. The shrine became a place of worship regarding affairs of state and for peace throughout the nation. Tadasu-no-Mori is a large stretch of forest in the temple grounds. The main hall was rebuilt 1863 while the other 53 buildings was rebuilt 1628. T he temple is a world heritage site.
